Religious Trauma Therapist in Orange County
Religious trauma is emotional and psychological distress that results from controlling, harmful or abusive experiences within religious contexts. According to a 2023 study, 1 in 3 Americans have experienced religious trauma.
Some common symptoms of religious trauma can include fear of punishment for “bad behavior”, disproportionate amounts of shame and guilt, depression as a result of hopelessness from guilt and shame, low self-esteem tied to belief in one’s unworthiness, lack of trust in self and others, especially in authority, existential crisis from confusion about the meaning of life and the afterlife, isolation and loneliness from the sudden loss of a tight-knit community, and anxiety from uncertainty about one’s beliefs.

Meet Manuela Yim, Religious Trauma therapist in La Habra, CA
My name is Manuela, and I am a religious trauma therapist in La Habra.
You may have grown up in or spent extensive time in an authoritarian religious environment that discouraged you from questioning or challenging any teachings or beliefs. This may have led to fear of punishment for not conforming or a general sense of unworthiness. Perhaps you were taught fear-based doctrines focused on sin, eternal damnation, or divine punishment which may have caused fear from any deviation of a set of rules or doctrines. Or maybe you’ve experienced blatant physical, sexual or spiritual abuse and manipulation from religious leaders and it led to the distrust or fear of all authority figures.
I understand the lasting pain church or religious trauma can cause from both personal and professional experience, and I’m here to help. I help people find clarity and healing from their confusing and painful experiences with church and religion. If you’re ready to start experiencing freedom from your religious trauma, reach out for a complimentary consultation with me today.
My approach to Church Trauma Therapy
I take a trauma-informed approach to working with religious trauma. This means instead of treating you as if something is wrong with you, I approach you with gentle curiosity about the experiences that led you to where you are today and help you make sense of them.
I provide a physically, emotionally and psychologically safe, contained space that goes at your pace, so that you can set the tone of your healing journey. Through transparency and authenticity, I focus on helping you build trust in our therapeutic relationship so that you can feel secure in knowing I will be in your corner to support you as you revisit painful memories.
I guide you to share your story in manageable portions and may teach you skills so that you can feel in control and not be overwhelmed by anxiety, fear or shame. I may help provide context to what is going on in your body and brain that makes you feel “stuck” in a state of anxiety or mistrust. Each approach I take is tailored to the unique needs you bring into the room. The goal is that you will leave our sessions feeling in control, empowered, and less alone in your pain.
