What Couples Come to Therapy For

The most common issues I work with couples on include communication challenges and recurring arguments, emotional disconnection, loss of trust or betrayal, infidelity, difficulty resolving conflict, intimacy and sexual concerns, resentment, family and cultural expectations, anxiety or trauma affecting the relationship, and navigating different needs for closeness and independence. If you and your partner resonate with any of these common couples challenges, reach out to me today for a free consultation. I can help guide your relationship into a new place of healing and restoration.

Couples Therapy for Asian American Couples

Cultural background, family expectations, and differing beliefs about relationships can shape how couples communicate and understand one another. For Asian American couples, these dynamics may include expectations around family responsibility, marriage, achievement, gender roles, or relationships with parents and extended family. Asian American couples may also carry a number of unspoken expectations and rules around relationships that I can help make more apparent so that you can choose how to navigate through them together.

Therapy can provide a space to explore these differences while helping each partner better understand the needs and experiences of the other. I bring my experience working with Asian American couples to help provide insight into the unique strengths and challenges of your relationship.

My Approach to
Couples Counseling

No matter how well a couple may think they know each other, there is always more to discover.

My approach to couples counseling includes viewing each of you in your entirety, within the context of your background, upbringing, values, personality, and everything else that makes up who you are.

I believe that everyone has a unique story to tell, and within each of your stories lies the answer to how you see the world, and why there may be areas of conflict between your perspectives.

I provide a supportive space for you to navigate the trickier areas in your relationship, while remaining connected to each other.

I help you voice the underlying needs that each of you is crying out for, in spite of seemingly "destructive” behaviors that may hinder connection.

This may include learning how to communicate about issues that cause you to become “triggered,” such as finances, infidelity, sex, and trauma.

Together, you and your partner will learn to become a safe space for each other as you find the courage and skills to explore the unknown parts of who you are.

I use a combination of Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Psychodynamic, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Mindfulness in my work with couples. Each couple is unique in what they need so I tailor my approach based on what makes sense for them.

The hope is that you will see more of yourself and your partner through this process, and expand your ability to love yourself and your partner as they are, while being challenged to grow into more whole versions of yourselves.
